Does anyone like carpentry or making things out of wood?
When I was at a training center they had a wood shop, and I had the great pleasure of making clock. It is made out of black walnut wood. It was fun but also a great learning experience. If I had the money and tools I would try to make more things but I am not sure where to look, maybe where there could be cheaper, decent tools.

I don't know anything about this subject..but I think it's really neat! :) Have never thought of pursuing it.

Not many people do. It's not bad once you learn how to use the tools safely. Not everyone gets the opportunity to do so. I learned to do it in a training center, as I have said before and it's not easy for everyone to get the training.

I built my DVD stand when I went to the training center in Minneapolis. Never in my life did I think I'd learn to use a chop saw by myself. It scared the shit out of me the first time I used it, but half an hour later, I was making cuts without a problem. The table saw was another monster the first time running a board through. the plainer is one of my least favorite tools because it's so easy for me to lose track of wihch pieces I've done. the other tool I hate, but which is completely necessary for any project, (unless anyone can think of an alternative for measuring to within 1 sixteenth of an inch or smaller), is the click rule. Oh my God, do I hate math.
I absolutely can't multitask or let my mind wander in the woodshop, but it's really fun to see the finished projects, like a guitar, a butterfly table, or a jewelry box.

This is something I've always been interested in, and never had the chance to do. When I went to the training center in Denver, they did not have a shop teacher at the time, therefore could not offer shop class. They never did during the time I was there. Once they got one after I graduated, I always wished I could go back just to take shop class. I love things that are made out of wood, and so have always wanted to learn to be able to make them. You guys are lucky that you got the chance. It's one of those things I know blind people can do, it's just something I've never had the opportunity for, much to my disappointment.

I love seeing things made of wood too, Alicia. You know it's not something easy and that not everyone gets a chance to do. I must say, making my clock was one of the hardest things I did at the center. I was pissed to discover that the face was dented, and the teacher put it in there knowing it was dented, but that's besides the point.
And, I know how scarey that table saw is! That was the hardest part of the project, getting over the fear of the three horse power blade moving that fast at times less than an inch from your hand.

glad to see this topic, Ryan. I, too, wish I had the time/money to do more carpentry. I thoroughly enjoyed what I did in wood shop.

i'd love to build a clock from scratch too. again, time, lack of tools, and lack of money are the problem right now. Where did you get the face for yours?

I don't know the exact name of it, but I believe it is based in Germany. Maybe Chelsea knows?

actually, if I had the money and equipment, I have a building out back I want to convert into a wood shop, so I can get back into carpentry and the like.
